Every month Valve updates the Steam Hardware Survey to showcase what bits of gear and software its users are running, and it’s always fascinating to see what graphics cards are out there driving the PC games we all play. It should come as no surprise that the NVIDIA GeForce range makes up the bulk, but the August 2022 numbers showcase that over 70% of all Steam gamers are on GeForce.
Which is, yeah, impressive. This number covers several generations of GeForce hardware, with the most popular GPUs being the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650, and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060. The mainstream GTX 1060 has been at the top of the list for quite some time too.
But, if you count both the desktop and laptop variants of the GeForce RTX 3060, the current mainstream GeForce card, that actually ends up being the most popular GPU out there. In fact, the survey paints a very impressive picture of the GeForce RTX 30 series’ success – with over 15% of GPUs coming from that range, including the high-end GeForce RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 cards.
In terms of NVIDIA’s dominance, the top discrete AMD GPU according to the survey is the AMD Radeon RX 580. The first current-gen card from the company on the list, the AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT, appears pretty low.
With both NVIDIA and AMD set to launch their next-generation of graphics in the coming months, it’ll be interesting to see how this list evolves.
